Reporting from Lima Convention Center in Peru - Paris has been officially awarded the 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games and Los Angeles has been given the nod to host the event in 2028, marking the first time in nearly a hundred years that two Summer Olympic Games have been awarded on a single day.

It is the first time the IOC has awarded a Games 11 years in advance, as it traditionally gives the next Olympic host city seven years to prepare.

The IOC in July made a decision to award the next two editions to the two cities left in the 2024 race, with Paris getting the 2024 edition and LA the Games four years later.

Los Angeles originally wanted the 2024 Games, but struck a deal with the International Olympic Committee to let Paris host those Games.

The Paris Games, which had fallen short with bids for 2008 and 2012, will mark 100 years since it was last held in the French capital.

Los Angeles moved to 2028, and will halt a stretch of 32 years without a Summer Games in the United States. President Thomas Bach asked if the vote could be by a show of hands, and nobody objected.

The Los Angeles 2028 Games, with a budget of US$5.2b (NZ$7.3b), will essentially follow the plan they had in place for 2024, including housing athletes at the UCLA campus.

"Everyone connected with LA 2028 is thrilled to be part of this win-win-win scenario for the Olympic movement", bid leader Casey Wasserman said in a statement. It's the third time each city will host the Olympics.

Paris will site events across iconic venues, and will build an Olympic Village along the Seine River at Saint-Denis.

The Olympic cauldron at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum is blazing again, ahead of the expected official awarding of the 2028 Games to LA.

This time, no unpleasant surprises for Los Angeles and Paris.

"These are two great cities from two great countries with a great Olympic history".

Paris last hosted the games in 1924. The IOC, Paris and Los Angeles are the three signatories, but Los Angeles is the candidate which had to do the adjusting.

The outcome of this campaign was known since August, and the announcement of the american city not to ultimately aim for that 2028 after the principle of the double award was voted on by the IOC.
