LA gets 2028 Olympics

All those in favour...IOC members confirm their agreement at a rubber-stamping event

It's an important move for Los Angeles to lock the award of being host of the 2028 Summer Games, which is scheduled to be announced with 2024 Olympics host city, Paris, together by the International Olympic Committee on Wednesday in Peru. The French capital beat runner up Los Angeles, who's agreed to host the next games in 2028 instead.

With the blessing of the 130th IOC Session that met in Lausanne in July, the IOC, Los Angeles, Paris and their National Olympic Committees have been working together in order to reach the agreement that was ratified by the IOC Session today.

The public in many cities, especially those in the Western democracies that have hosted the majority of these games, is no longer eager to approve blank checks for bid committees and governments that have to come up with the millions simply to bid for the Olympics, then billions more to stage them if they win.

"This is a win-win-win situation for Paris, Los Angeles and the entire Olympic Movement", said IOC President Thomas Bach. "Olympic status will accelerate that exciting growth - Paris 2024 would establish baseball and softball firmly in French sports culture".

The decision marks the first time the International Olympic Committee has granted two Summer Olympics at once.

"Usually you have two or three cities crying in the corner at this point being asked how they feel to have lost".

LA has also hosted the Games twice before, in 1932 and 1984, and its 2028 edition has the motto "Follow the Sun".

The two cities are getting the hosting rights without the usual dramatic vote.

The IOC Evaluation Commission confirmed on Monday that the City of Angels is ready to deliver a sustainable, low-risk new Games for a new era, with long-term benefits for LA and the Olympic and Paralympic Movements, said LA 2028 in a press release, reports Xinhua news agency.

"Bringing the Olympics back home to LA gives us the chance to imagine what our city will look like a decade from now", Eric Garcetti, mayor of Los Angeles, said. A big number, indeed, though it must be put into perspective: Earlier this summer, organizers in Tokyo estimated their cost for the 2020 Games at $12.6 billion. It bid unsuccessfully for the games of 1992, 2008 and 2012.

Both cities will host their third Olympics.

Only one totally new venue is planned - a swimming and diving arena to be built near the Stade de France, which will serve as the Olympic stadium.

"Our goal has always been to create a Games concept that fits the long-term needs of LA and its people, not change our city to fit the Games", said LA 2028 Chairman Casey Wasserman.
