Arriving in Ottawa at the start of a critical week, the PM will reveal she is setting up a new working group with Canadian PM Justin Trudeau to "cut and paste" the country's trade deal with the European Union for Brexit Britain.

The Prime Minister echoed the hopes of Canada's prime minister Justin Trudeau after talks between the pair in Ottawa.

The comments represent the strongest yet against the USA aerospace giant since Boeing launched a trade dispute with Montreal-based rival Bombardier earlier this year.

Worth an estimated £15.2 billion a year, discussing the trade relationship between the two countries is a big hurdle to overcome for the British Prime Minister.

Many senior Tories accused him of trying to derail the Prime Minister's negotiations, with Home Secretary Amber Rudd suggesting that he should be supporting Theresa May instead of challenging her approach.

The bilateral trade relationship is now worth £15.2bn annually to both economies, with £1.75bn of Canadian money having been invested in the United Kingdom since March 2017 and more than 10,000 United Kingdom companies exporting goods to Canada, the government said.

The Prime Minister was facing calls to sack Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson, who was branded a "backseat driver" by a Cabinet colleague after setting out his own vision for a hard Brexit just days before a major speech in which Mrs May is expected to offer compromise.

The EU-Canada Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA), which cuts out 98 per cent of Canadian import duties and took many years to agree, comes into force from September 21.

"When we come together and work as one to project our shared values on the world stage, we form a powerful union".

No 10 said Mr Johnson is expected to attend Mrs May's speech on United Nations reform on Wednesday.

She said last night: "My visit to Canada today is not only about recognising our past but also looking ahead to our bright future".

The UK-Canada bilateral trade relationship is worth £15.2billion annually and Britain is the second-biggest destination for Canadian investment overseas, with £1.75billion invested since March alone.

No 10 has appointed Andrew Percy, the former northern powerhouse minister, as her new trade envoy for Canada.

After her meeting with Trudeau, May will travel to NY tomorrow for the UN General Assembly.
