Rohingya influx started from 2012: Centre to SC

India's government said Monday that it has evidence there are extremists who pose a threat to the country's security among the Rohingya Muslims who have fled Myanmar and settled in many Indian cities. They also said they were running short of food since August 25, when Rohingya militants launched deadly attacks in Rakhine state, provoking a fierce crackdown by the Myanmar military. National security ranks highest on country's list of priorities given its geopolitical influence in the region and its vulnerability to cross border infiltrations due to the porous nature of its borders.

The matter will be heard next on 3 October.

Haley, for her part, said the U.S. will continue to urge the Myanmar authorities to halt military operations and commit to facilitating the safe return of civilians to their homes. They have not yet submitted anything in this regard and said that they will submit it in sealed covers on the next date of hearing. Many of them have managed to acquire fake / fraudulently obtained Indian identity documents i.e. PAN Card and voter cards.

Asserting that the Rohingya issue was very sensitive and the Centre's "blanket approach" will not help sort out the matter, the Congress on Monday demanded the government to take all parties into confidence.

In an address to the nation, Myanmar's de facto leader and officially State Counsellor, Aung San Suu Kyi said she condemned all human rights violations but did not acknowledge any persecution of Rohingya Muslims in her country. Further it was stated that is an organised network of touts operating in Myanmar and West Bengal and Tripura to facilitate illegal Rohingya influx. "All the Rohingya cooperate with the police and give them all the required information", the petition also added.

The move came after Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson joined representatives of the US, Bangladesh, Indonesia, Turkey, Australia, Canada, Sweden and Denmark to raise the issue with Myanmar's national security adviser on the margins of the United Nations General Assembly in NY. The case came to the court following a government move to deport Rohingya. "The State of India and the affidavit with the Supreme Court are permanent". In a 16-page affidavit, the Centre held that the current influx of illegal Rohingya immigrants into India was a "potential threat to internal and national security" and in such a situation the Central government would take a policy decision based on several parameters, diplomatic considerations and potential dangers to the nation. Their petition says that the Centre's plan to deport them violated global conventions.
