Ruling Party Urges Peaceful Resolution of N. Korean Nuclear Issue

"We can not allow these doomsday weapons to endanger our world and our children's future", U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said as he opened the treaty for signing.

"Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's refusal to sign on to the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons is threatening Canada's chances at securing a seat once again on the Security Council", said Elizabeth May, Leader of the Green Party of Canada (MP, Saanich-Gulf Islands).

He called the pact "an important step towards the universally held goal of a world free of nuclear weapons".

Nuclear powers argue their arsenals serve as a deterrent against a nuclear attack and say they remain committed to the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT). "We can not allow these doomsday weapons to endanger our world and our children's future", he said.

NATO added in its press release that the treaty did not take into the account the increased threat to the global security against the backdrop of North Korea's recent nuclear and missile activity.

From the beginning, the treaty was met with strong opposition from nuclear-armed states, which boycotted negotiations.

Supporters of the pact, however, say the time has come for the worldwide community to push harder toward eliminating atomic weapons as a 50-year-old Non-Proliferation Treaty has effectively failed to contain the thirst of powers for expanding their nuclear arsenal.

The Treaty will enter into force 90 days after it has been ratified by at least 50 countries.

Similarly, for nuclear armed states joining the treaty, it provides for a time-bound framework for negotiations leading to the verified and irreversible elimination of its nuclear weapons programme.

"The more the Australian people know that our government is not representing us on this, the easier it's going to be to get them to take this treat seriously".
