Tesla and AMD tipped in development of AI chip for autonomous cars

The CEO of chip fabricator GlobalFoundries, Sanjay Jha, presented at company's technology conference in Santa Clara, California yesterday.

Mobileye used to supply Tesla with the chips for its Autopilot system, a driver-assistance tool that allows Tesla vehicles to drive themselves in traffic and park on their own. Developing chips in-house will make Tesla less reliant on Nvidia in the future, according to CNBC, and Nvidia stock fell nearly 4 percent on Wednesday evening after the news broke.

As Tesla pushes towards its goal of building a self-driving vehicle, it has emerged that the on-board artificial intelligence chip is being built upon AMD intellectual property, this is according to a source close to the project. The electric carmaker has apparently already received the first samples of its processor prototype for testing, according to the report. Intel bought Mobileye in March for $15.3 billion in order to further its own autonomous-car project. It's a move that would clearly be in line with the recent hiring of ex-AMD executive Jim Keller to replace Chris Lattner as head of Tesla's Autopilot hardware engineering effort.

Tesla has made no secret of the fact that it wants to put fully autonomous cars on roads in the next few years.

Based on a report by The Verge, Tesla also recently hired leading AI expert Andrej Karpathy as the company's new director of AI and Autopilot.

While neither company has commented on the matter, the news saw AMD's share price end the day up 5 percent and continue to climb after hours.

Elon Musk has said that Tesla will deliver completely autonomous driving capabilities by 2019. As it seems now, they have partnered up with AMD to do so.
