NFL Week Three Match Up: Saints at Panthers

Terrance Mitchell picks up his second interception of the game

The Saints (1-2) opened a 24-6 lead on the first possession of the third quarter when Brees threw a 40-yard touchdown strike to Ted Ginn Jr., who is a former Panther.

The defense was stout for most of the game, especially compared to the porous performance from the first two weeks.

Newton's first interception came on a great play by Saints cornerback P.J.

I think Newton is going to blow up against this Saints defense and carve them up for his first 300 yard game of the season.

It's the NFC South opener for the New Orleans Saints (0-2) and Carolina Panthers (2-0), two teams on very different trajectories.

On Sunday, the Saints accomplished both with an impressive 34-13 win over the Carolina Panthers at Bank of America Stadium. Newton entered the game with 19 career touchdown passes and seven interceptions against the Saints. Translation: Big yards, Big plays, Big points. A defense that entered the game ranked No. 1 in the National Football League gave up two first-half touchdowns after giving up only two field goals in the first two games.

The offensive line allowed Newton to be terrorized, the receivers were unable to get separation and the offensive coordinator failed to change up anything from the first two games.

DICKSON A NONFACTOR: Ed Dickson replaced Olsen at tight end for the Panthers, but was a nonfactor in the passing game.

Truth be told, Newton is not himself entering Week 3, almost six months after undergoing surgery to fix a partially torn rotator cuff in his right throwing shoulder.

About a dozen New Orleans players either knelt or sat on the bench during the anthem, including veteran running back Adrian Peterson. Lutz missed a 56-yarder that could have put the game away with 8:57 to play, but the Panthers couldn't take advantage. Michael Thomas hauled in a team-high 5 catches for 89 yards, while Brandon Coleman caught 4 balls for 82 yards and a touchdown.

Injuries: Saints defensive tackle David Parry suffered a left leg injury on the opening series and did not return.

Saints: They head across the ocean to face the Miami Dolphins in London next Sunday. Fantasy owners would be wise to do so for next week's trip to New England. Sep.
