Brexit: Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson outlines his four 'red lines'

"I set my government a mission to make our country a fairer place".

Rather, than address the specific case, Ms May simply said: "I've accepted, Andrew, that there have been problems with the rollout".

The Tories will hope that the tuition fee pledge, as well as a £10 billion boost for first-time buyers, will make them more attractive to younger voters.

UK Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson told reporters that a proposed transition period to ease the impact of Brexit must not last "a second more" than the 2 years that PM May proposed during a speech in Italy last week. The transition should be two years and "not a second more", he said.

The move came as a letter to the prime minister from senior pro-Brexit Tory MPs and business figures in the Leave Means Leave group stated: "If the European Union is not seriously negotiating a free trade deal by Christmas 2017, the government should give formal notice that we will move to World Trade Organisation rules in March 2019".

Theresa May and the Tories will launch a policy blitz aimed at wooing younger voters after the opening of their party conference was hijacked by Boris Johnson. The issue will again dominate the event, but this time May will struggle to stop plotting and recriminations swamping her attempts to set out her domestic agenda and regain some authority.

She said: "What I have is a Cabinet that are united in the mission of this Government and that's what you will see this week".

'That's why we will invest an extra £10 billion in our Help to Buy: Equity Loan scheme to help a whole new generation of young people, across the United Kingdom, with the upfront costs of home ownership.

The Government also plans a £10bn expansion of the Help To Buy scheme, which is aimed at helping an extra 135,000 people get a foot on the housing ladder.

"Making progress as a nation means supporting young people and families to achieve their dreams of home ownership", Chancellor of the Exchequer Philip Hammond said.

While taking part in a national day of campaigning, Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn said the latest intervention by the Foreign Secretary demonstrated the Prime Minister was not in control of Brexit strategy.

The comments came as May told Tory supporters that this week's party conference is a chance for the Conservatives to look to the future after a "disappointing" general election. May will appeal to her party to unite to face the threat of being thrown out of power.

Most recent opinion polls show Labour slightly ahead of the Conservatives.
