Jo Bertram: Uber's boss in London to leave firm

Now, Uber's new CEO #Dara Khosrowshahi is going to be in London Tuesday in order to speak to transport authorities so that the company can resume operations in London.

The meeting comes just one month after Khosrowshahi took over as head of the beleaguered startup and marks the biggest challenge yet of his tenure.

Dara Khosrowshahi, who took over Uber's top job last month, flew to London for an urgent, high-level meeting to address the capital's concerns regarding its ride-hailing service.

Within days of the decision, more than half a million people had signed a petition calling for the reinstatement of Uber's licence to operate in London, where it has 3.5 million registered users. The company this week appealed a decision made earlier this year that would require it to classify drivers as workers entitled to minimum wage and holiday pay.

Among the issues raised by Transport for London include how Uber reports serious criminal offences, how drivers' medical certificates are obtained, and how criminal record checks are conducted.

There's also a sense that the London Mayor Sadiq Khan, who welcomed the apology, would like TfL to find a way to reach a deal with Uber in the longer run.

The Uber executive responsible for the United Kingdom has quit, as the company's worldwide boss prepares to meet the head of the London transport authority in an attempt to get the firm's licence reinstated. "Further steps in this process will take place over the coming weeks", a spokesperson said.

He will sit down with TfL commissioner Mike Brown in a private meeting, with the pair expected to discuss commitments Uber can make if it wants to continue operating.

He is battling to steer a new course for the app, which has faced regulatory crackdowns, court cases, bans and protests around the world, as well as several boardroom controversies.

The app-based taxi firm will not be able to pick up passengers in the city beyond the expiry of its current licence.

Meanwhile, the chief executive of Uber rival Kabbee, a booking and price comparison service for minicabs, said Uber should also be investigated over its tax payments and market dominance.

"It's. true that we've got things wrong along the way".
