'Blade Runner 2049' Fades to $31.5 Million Opening Weekend

Paul Dergarabedian, senior media analyst with comScore, said: "The core of enthusiastic and loyal "Blade Runner" fans were over 25 and predominantly male, and propelled the film as expected to the top spot, but a lengthy running time and lesser interest among females made it tougher for the film to reach the original weekend box office projections".

The sequel to 1982′s Blade Runner, Harrison Ford returns with Ryan Gosling for the new movie, which earned $31.5 million this weekend. Ford reprised his role as Rick Deckard from the original movie. Since then, the Quebec visual effects studio has closely followed Denis Villeneuve's career and had the opportunity to work on three different films that he directed, namely Enemy (2013), Arrival (2016) and now Blade Runner 2049 (2017).

Blade Runner 2049 has made far less than expected on its opening weekend at the United States box office.

Deadline showed that forecasts for the Denis Villeneuve blockbuster have been falling since Friday from an expected weekend box office of $45m to $36m, but Forbes revealed that as of Saturday October 7 the film had made just $12.7m including $4m from Thursday previews. Young people go to a movie's opening weekend, but with "2049" having an R rating and a running time of over two-and-a-half-hours it wasn't a hot ticket, it seems. Those who did see the movie at least had positive thoughts, giving it an A- CinemaScore. Starring Kate Winslet and Idris Elba, the thriller had its debut at the Toronto International Film Festival this September.

But so far, it's not looking so good. Even that expectation, it should be noted, was modest in the context of the film.

Australia launched with $3.6 million, beating out "Interstellar" by 9% and "Gravity" by 28%. Also of note is Focus Features' Victoria and Abdul, which expanded to 732 theaters this weekend and brought in $4.1 million for eighth place.

Sunday's estimated result throws serious doubt onto what had been high hopes for a box office success story.
