Vettel himself was quick to defend his team despite the fact he has now retired from two of the last three Grands Prix, leaving him 59 points behind Hamilton in the title race.

The German made a clean start, hanging on to second off the line, but it soon became apparent the problem ran much deeper as Vettel, clearly lacking power, plummeted down the order.

He did that by quickly opening up a 3-second lead on Verstappen in second place, despite two safety cars in the first 10 laps.

The current result places Hamilton in the title lead with a total of 306 points, 59 points clear off Vettel who is second with a total of 247 points.

With four races to go and a lead of 59 points, It can be assumed that Lewis Hamilton will in all possibility win the 2017 Formula one season unless nearly everything goes wrong with Team Mercedes.

Hamilton has won the race on the Suzuka track twice - in 2014 and 2015.

"He also had received a flashing blue light informing him that race leader Lewis Hamilton was closing on him for over a lap before". Renault's Jolyon Palmer, in his last race for the team, finished 12th while Torro Rosso's new rookie Pierre Gasly took P13 ahead of Stoffel Vandoorne (McLaren) and Pascal Wehrlein (Sauber). Of course it hurts, and we are all disappointed.

"It was not ideal for both of us, he lost time and I think I lost quite a few seconds at that point as well which would have helped me massively at the end of the race".

"I wouldn't say I have one hand on it".

The win is Hamilton's eighth victory this season, and it his 21st consecutive race finishing in the points.

"The misfortune of Ferrari is unbelievable, for the third race in a row", he said.

"We just need to collect the points but I can relate to how it feels for Ferrari and it is certainly not very nice". For the majority of the race, Hamilton was able to manage the gap, but a late puncture for Lance Stroll's Williams caused a Virtual Safety Car with just a handful of laps remaining.

"There is also some positives, but for sure now you don't look at the positives because it is not the day to look at them". "If I told you Seb was going to DNF twice you would have said it was impossible", he said. The race was restarted on lap 3/53.

"It is a circuit I have always enjoyed and now with this year's cars it is a lot of fun".

Ferrari's scant consolation was fifth place for Kimi Raikkonen, who started 11th after a gearbox penalty, as Ocon and team-mate Sergio Perez took sixth and seventh ahead of Haas drivers Kevin Magnussen and Romain Grosjean.
